Half-life 2 is free? Well, some of it is, yes. The multiplayer/deathmatch first person shooter aspect of the game is free to play through Steam if you have either Nvidia or ATI powered graphic cards (see links below). Unfortunately as an Intel graphics chipset user (gasp) I was unable to get the game up and running. The majority of users on Steam, a whopping 92% from a survey, are able to play. If you have never experienced the joy of the grav gun before (allowing you to launch hand grenades or common items found in the game world) or launching guided missles from your shoulder, this is your chance. The game has some bugs that it seems aren’t going to be worked out in the near future. But dude. It’s still Half-Life 2.

Heroes in the Sky is a dogfighting MMO, set in World War II. Choose from two factions (Allies and Axis) that engage in faction battles -- aka Occupational Wars -- and level up to unlock new gear. The game features over 70 flyable planes and numerous missions for players of all levels. The combat is fast-paced and fun, but that doesn’t take away much from strategy. Heroes in the Sky has four plane types that spice up the gameplay with extra tactics. For example, bombers can bomb ground targets, but gunners can heal and revive fallen allies, etc. There are also numerous events for competitive players. Players can customize their planes and upgrade them – thus, the game features something of a crafting system. The only downside is the rather large PvP bonuses for players who purchase extra gear.
Set in third century warring China, based on the movie Red Cliff released in 2008 (an adaptation of one of the four great novels of ancient China). Unlike other RPGs, your weapon of choice dictates which skills are available to you (basically enhancements and special attacks with that specific weapon). The premise of the game is preparing for, joining, and then defending one of the three warring kingdoms of the era. Your character is going to compete in aggressive player-versus-player battle at level forty and choose one of the kingdoms to devote himself to. The quest system is rich with historical events and battle recreations. Character battle movements are modeled from live martial arts performances. See Videos >>

Infinite Realms is a sci-fi themed MMO strategy game, played through Facebook. Players have to build production structures, upgrade their outposts, train troops and recruit heroes to conquer new areas, build alliances and fight both player and computer enemies (mobs). Although the game doesn’t offer much originality, it is the sci-fi setting that has its appeal. If you’re one for stories, the game offers "mission text" for each mission you’re given, and the missions are daily. Infinite Realms is by no means a game that could earn the title for ‘most innovative Facebook game’, but it’s playable and has a somewhat small but friendly community.
Enter the game world of Arcana and choose between three impish-looking races and six classes (two per race) which evolve into different sub-class specialties. There are also nine exotic mounts to get to your destinations more quickly. Monster cards allow your character to transform into other beings temporarily. Dungeons, the main experience and equipment builders of Arcana, require team skills to defeat the elite monsters and multiple bosses, most with special weapons and abilities. Last but not least: the PVP battles yield reward points you can exchange for items to enhance your character.

You resources are primarily gold, trained combatants and spies. Use your spies to Scout your enemies defenses, Steal gold, or Assassinate enemy troops while they are sleeping. Real-time attacks and espionage take place in the form of a live news feed, allowing you to respond quickly to actions taken against you. Choose your allies wisely and join a clan for safety. Lost saga is a fighting/action MMO with cartoony graphics (think of Team Fortress 2 meets FMA) and an awesome, hectic gameplay. There are eleven game modes and over 50 playable heroes now, each with their own skills. You can level your heroes up and buy weapons for them. The developers eventually want to raise the hero count to 100. Some of the game modes are particularly fresh: soccer; crusade (dungeon PvE mode); and prison mode (‘catch me if you can’). The arenas are well-made and with their own quirks, and combat offers a lot of fun. Altogether, Lost Saga offers more than simple entertainment; other fighting MMOs, as fun as they might be, cannot compete with Lost Saga’s character/arena count and thus are much more likely to become boring in the long term. Lucent Heart is a 3D fantasy MMORPG with an anime influence and loads of social features. Players can choose from two base classes – warrior and mage – and two sub-classes for each, at level 10. Players get bonuses and abilities that are dependent on their zodiac signs. The combat is somewhat dull, but social gaming is greatly rewarded through added experience gain for ‘couples’, additional accessories, etc. Quests flow nicely, and casual gamers particularly will enjoy the ‘find monster’ and ‘find NPC’ options. Overall, Lucent Heart is a nice game -- if you don’t mind the graphics. The story does have its appeal (you don’t see Greek mythology/anime crossovers much, perhaps not at all), the social features aren’t bad, and the extras like battle pets, and crafting, make Lucent Heart a hearty experience for anyone looking for a fun, casual game. Cute anime-styled RPG with many classic features. Once you become a citizen, participate in dating to access special dungeons or start a family where you can share in owning a farm.
Luvinia Online is a fantasy-themed 3D MMORPG with notable anime influences. Luvinia has the usual four races -- Elves, Humans, Orcs and Dwarves. There are more than the usual number of classes, though; you can play as a Warrior, Rogue, or a Magician, and each class gets two advancements at later levels. The game world is sizable, and you’ll find the many landscapes appealing to the eye (in contrast with the weak interface and its microscopic fonts). Combat is fluid, and click-moving helps when travelling longer distances. Luvinia Online’s PvP is more balanced than the PvP in most similar games: strategy actually means something in Luvinia Online, whereas other games are often gear-centric. Pets and social features are here, too. Luvinia is rather new, so there are fun events and competitions for players. And even without them, the game is worth a try. See Videos >>
Mabinogi is a 3D MMORPG fantasy-themed game with cute, anime-style graphics. The game’s world is quite unique, combining the elements of social games and those of RPGs. There are an awful lot of things to master for a beginning player (the eccentric combat system; fishing minigames; cooking; and even composing music if you like), but Mabinogi has a very helpful community for a F2P game, and skills are easy to use once learned. You’ll especially like setting up campfires where you and fellow players can engage in lively conversations under the night sky. However, there are quite many paid features in this game: pets, character resets, and creating new characters costs Nexon gold. See Videos >>
Maegica is a fantasy-themed MMO RPG/strategy game. Choose from 4 heroes (Yun, Diva, Selina, and Bronx) which give ‘racial’ bonuses for your city. You can build an army and use it to defeat NPCs or participate in epic PvP battles which can host up to 100 players simultaneously in one of the 13 available battlegrounds. What stands out in combat is that Maegica isn’t all about army size or unit composition, but rather about how you equip your heroes, how many of them are ready for combat, and how you position them for battle. In short, it’s the little things that count in this sometimes patchy but otherwise fine browser-based game. See Videos >>

Players earn achievements for their friends to see as they progress through the game, and interact with people from both their own and other villages. Miramagia has an easy, yet flawed interface (the player’s view is limited to the character), but offers some fun for anyone who’s looking for a casual, relaxing game. See Videos >>

NosTale is a fantasy MMORPG with flashy anime graphics. There are four character classes – adventurer (default), swordsman, archer, and sorcerer; you can only select a class when you reach level 15. NosTale isn’t a particularly catchy tale, but quests add to the story, unlike in so many other games. The game has an awesome pet system – you can capture mobs when they are down to low HP, level together with them, and use them in combat. You can build your own house, buy furniture, and invite friends to visit. Combat in NosTale is rather uneventful; PvP is interesting, though. If you like games with a style akin to that of Ragnarok, you’ll like NosTale. See Videos >>

OverKings is a fantasy MMORPG, played in the browser. The game is set in a mythological world, and its lore is fine, actually, revolving around a world in chaos after a struggle between two great heroes, caused by the vicious hero Nameless. There are eight character classes (warriors, healers, wizards – the usual). There are plenty of PvP and PvE opportunities as well as quests in OverKings, but most of the quests are along the lines of the usual “kill this” and “bring that”. OverKings is instance-based, and you have to explore the game world to find mobs to fight. Hint: you might prefer to avoid ‘red zones’ without a party, as other players can loot up to 30% of your equipment if you get killed. See Videos >>
Oz World is a virtual social scene where you level up and earn gold to buy stuff. You can make friends, buy a house, fish, and more. Several different towns to visit.
Pandora Saga is an MMORPG, published by Atlus in the US. The game is set in a fantasy setting and features six races, three factions, and four classes with three job advancements for each. The story is fine, and even manages to borrow something from Greek mythology. A special treat is the PvP system, as Realm-vs-Realm play and massive PvP plays a large role in the game. There are lots of quests, and the game world is beautifully designed; however, there are some clearly visible downsides – Pandora Saga has awkward combat and occasional bugs, plus the player base is rather small, which keeps the aforementioned PvP instances from reaching their full potential for fun.
This multiplayer golf game reduces the complex rules of golf to something simple and fun for everyone. Meet new friends on the links in this beautiful fantasy world.

There are five races and ten classes, and the ridiculously advanced character creation screen ensures that every character you create will be truly unique. The user interface is quick to grasp and intuitive. There are loads of quests, and many of them are related to your character’s development; for example, ‘spiritual cultivation’ quests allow you to learn skills you wouldn’t be able to learn otherwise. The game has an in-game quest helper in case you get stuck with a quest. There are a lot of mounts (including flying ones), plenty of PvP, and awesome instances (80 versus 80 faction wars… with catapults and towers!) and events. PvP only opens up on level 30. Browser-based first person shooter ported from Quake III Arena. When you first start playing, there is a match making system that will measure your skill as you play a series of introductory matches to help place you in your league. Successful game mod developers were contracted to assist in the game design, giving the game some quirky cheesiness to master on the road to fragging to your heart's content. See the tutorial videos on their site for tricks like circle jumps to get a feel for what I’m talking about. The game is ad-supported, playing videos between matches and such, but it doesn't interrupt gameplay. There are eight game modes to participate in. A few modes are subscription-based but not to worry. There’s plenty of action and little reason to subscribe for more. See Videos >>

Rappelz is a fantasy-themed MMORPG. The game has a vast class system; players can choose from three classes – mage, warrior, and archer – three jobs and two “sub-jobs” for each job. The graphics are okay, but landscapes and cities lack detail. Rappelz has a developed pet system with pet skills and transformations. The combat is nice, and it gets more interesting as the character’s level increases. The quests, however, are dull from the very beginning, and steer towards grinding rather than advancing the story at all. Rappelz is very PvP-centric and that’s the most challenging aspect of the game; players can attack other players even from their own faction, and things become rather intense on PvP servers where players can sometimes be looted upon death. In this medieval RPG be a fighter or mage with hundreds of weapons and spells to choose from and upgrade. Save the towns by defeating monsters for gold and experience in turn-based combat.
AKA Regnum Online, Realms Online is a fantasy themed MMORPG. Choose your hero from three realms that battle each other tirelessly. Six classes and nine races to choose from; classes are race-dependent. A unique aspect of the game, Realm vs. Realm play, takes place in the “war zone” of the map where realms engage in war games, trying to capture their foes’ forts and castles to get bonuses for their realms or corrupt others for a time. Well-written lore and a massive game world. The graphics are rather outdated however, with landscapes often lacking in detail. The start seems slow, but the pace picks up on levels past 10, once you’re ready for PvP and have gotten used to the somewhat complex combat. See Videos >>
Open source first person shooter with all the latest bells and whistles. The agile gameplay is fun, allowing you to use walls to run on and kick off from or perform double jumps or jump off high perches. Cooperatively build maps online with other players. As it is built from the Cube engine (but entirely redone from the ground up), it allows for smooth game play on lower end machines and lower bandwidth. Lots and lots of gore. Team members and opposing forces are easily identified (if a little bland). Many features like cross-hair radar and impulse jumping have been copied and revamped from other games, hopefully augmenting familiar gameplay. I for one found the cross-hair radar a bit difficult to get used to at first, but it does help to stay focused on targeting and movement rather than camping -- which is where the game truly shines. One other feature that I have to mention is the auditory feedback for landed shots. As an opponent's health decreases, each successive shot landed gives a "pinging" sound increasing in pitch. Very handy, and unique to Red Eclipse as far as I've seen. See Videos >>
Choose one of the three realms, defend your castle and fight epic wars against the other realms. Features nine character classes, 200 quests, thousands of pieces of equipment to discover and the ability to capture forts and castles.
Detailed 3D tank combat set in a post-apocalyptic world. High emphasis on lone and clan death-match. Tight action and simple controls. Use landscapes to your advantage. Top ranking players of special events receive cash prizes. Enhance your tank with weapons and equipment purchased with experience points gathered from gameplay or purchase them in the item shop. Browser-based requiring the Unity plug-in (which if you’ve never installed it before isn’t very painful). See Videos >>
Remnant Knights is an anime-inspired, school-themed MMORPG. Choose from two factions -- Dragon Academy and Owl Academy -- that train knights (players) of six classes. The game has a cool soundtrack (if you don’t hate j-pop) and cute graphics that stay true to the anime genre, just like the story does. The combat is fluid and fun to watch. Remnant Knights has everything the usual MMORPG has – PvP, guilds, pets, etc., – but what’s fresh is that players can create ‘charity’ events that add additional money drops to other players’ loot. The game’s skill system is well-developed and new skills add fun even to the end-game.
Richstate is an online business simulator with some RPG elements. In this game you can start your business in five different industries, and each industry has 10 sorts of stores in it. Richstate isn’t a hard business simulator, yet you’ll probably have difficulty with hiring the right employees as you’ll have to invest R$D (the game’s currency) for recruitment. The game’s most interesting aspect is the car-racing system – we all know that businessmen always drive fast cars – which adds PvP and PvE to the game, as users can gain experience fighting against ‘cars on the loose’, compete with other players, and purchase upgrades for their cars. Other notable strong points are graphics and the awesome car part system. Although the game isn’t hard at the first glance, it can serve as prime entertainment for more than an evening or two.
A medieval fantasy-themed MMORPG, set in the mystical world of Telara. Players can choose from six races, 4 classes, and a whopping 32 sub-classes to customize their characters to the max. Many storyline-connected events happen in RIFT – players can defend cities from invasion, participate in guild quests, or simply explore the beautifully designed game world. The game is full of PvP instances and arenas, and, to top it off, slaying your enemies rewards you with much more than mere ‘honor’. RIFT is very complete for a new online game (especially the class and skill system), and, although not aspiring to be something ground breaking, the game offers an experience that rivals most similar games out there. Rise of The Immortals is a Defense of the Ancients/League of Legends style MMO available on Steam. Players pick from a number of heroes (or purchase new ones) and set out to destroy enemy towers together with their team. A solo/co-op PvE mode is also available to quest for cool items and other in-game rewards. The actual heroes are somewhat inconsistent – for example, one would expect a ‘fire elemental’ to have spells connected with fire... but not in this game. Combat-wise, the game plays well though. Players have to level their selected heroes to access new skills and items. The gameplay is highly reminiscent of similar games, and for online play, Rise of Immortals struggles to introduce something new. The dungeon co-op mode is fun, however, and offers a refreshing change from PvP; the social features are also strong, and could be considered better than those of League of Legends. See Videos >>

Rumble Fighter is an online fighting MMO. The game features six character classes – Striker, Soul Fighter, Elementalist, Alchemist, Shaman and Android. Rumble Fighter offers competitive combat for all players, as the ranking system helps finding enemies of your skill level. There are numerous general and class-locked fighting styles to choose from. There are nine game modes (some are quite unique to this game) which test the player’s ability to cope with new situations, as well as trickjumps which become important on higher levels of play. Characters can transform during the game, effectively putting an end to rock-paper-scissors combat. If you fancy fighting games, you’ll like Rumble Fighter as the game offers a fresh experience with every new character. See Videos >>
Runes of Magic is a MMORPG, set in a fantasy world, graphically similar to that of WoW. There are eight classes and two races – elves and humans – to choose from, and each character can have a sub-class at lvl 10. The sub-class has to be leveled up separately. Quests are plentiful and intertwine with the story very well – players will almost never have to simply kill 20 desert rats for a quest, because most of the quests are connected with the story. There’s a peculiar ‘rune system’ that rewards players with stats when runes are collected. PvP play is very developed in Runes of Magic, both in instances and open-world, with players sometimes dropping items when slain by another player. See Videos >>

Scarlet Legacy is a fantasy-themed MMORPG. You can choose your character from four classes (warrior, assassin, monk, and mystic), and level up for 30 levels. The game is a nice experience – you’ll especially like the ‘auto-bot’ which you can use for grinding quests (it seems like a bad idea at first, but it really frees a lot of your time). The combat system is decent and the animations are smooth and nicely done (character jumps look patchy, though). The mount system is what makes SL stand out: mounts are upgradeable, there is a great number of mount types, and all of them look awesome. Although Scarlet Legacy has an indistinct story (all you're given is that you ‘have to save princess Scarlet’) and an ugly translation, the game has more than enough strong points to make up for it.

The combat is nice, and it gets more interesting as the character’s level increases. Seven dragons is a browser-based online strategy game. There are two factions to choose from, as well as three races in each faction – each with its own racial abilities. Seven Dragons has a gripping story based around dragons. Sadly, the story doesn’t integrate with the actions players take. There are plenty of hero units –- which are unique to each race -- to hire, as well a great number of race-unique troops. The game process is rewarding, and there is a lot to do each day, including quests, fighting, upgrading your city, equipping your hero and building buildings. Shadowland Online is a strategy MMO with RPG elements. Humankind has been all but annihilated by the undead that have entered through a break in space, and it is up to -- of course -- the player to save humanity. The story is nice actually, and combines real history with fiction: for example, you can win over the Spartan hero Leonidas as a quest reward. Choose from three races and three main unit types; build up your city; form alliances, and, finally, muster up enough strength to get rid of the undead once and for all. Lots of social features and some in-game events also help. Although the game is somewhat complicated once you’re out of the tutorial, it is very rewarding in the later levels, and is surprisingly fun. See Videos >>

Shaiya is a fantasy-themed MMORPG set in a world where two factions -- the Alliance of Light and the Union of Fury – battle tirelessly for control over the world. Each faction has two races and three classes to choose from. There’s a rather large skill system; even on lower levels players will have plenty of skills to use. The servers are densely populated, and the world offers a great number of quests and PvP opportunities. Shaiya has a dark, somewhat cryptic atmosphere, and the graphics aren’t bad at all. What sets Shaiya apart is the character leveling: players are able to select their leveling pace at character creation. Players with faster leveling will have weaker characters in the end, but this feature ensures that casual gamers will have fun playing Shaiya, too. See Videos >>
Browser-based massively multplayer RPG. Adventure in a large game world which looks and feels very similar to Diablo. You have to click to move (no arrows or W-A-S-D option). Skyrama is a browser-based airport simulator with nice, cartoony graphics. Players start with a simple plane runway and expand their airport with service bays, passenger towers and warehouses; decorations can also be built, and they actually do something -- they increase the passenger flow. There are daily and story-driven quests and a social system which allows you to earn both you and your buddies some extra aircoin, the main resource in Skyrama. You have to service and maintain your planes (your planes act quite like pets) and as well as other players’ planes which arrive at your airport to get gold. Skyrama is pretty fun for a casual game, and exploring the game’s numerous features and buildings just might get you hooked. See Videos >>

Open source total conversion of Quake III Arena, a first person shooter. A slew of historically accurate weapons from the American frontier era to choose from: pistols, rifles, shotguns, dynamite, knives, Molotov cocktails, and even a gatling gun. All game modes (except for deathmatch-styled) involve the use of rounds, a time limit, where if you die you have to wait for the next segment to begin before your re-spawn. The most interesting of the modes is Bank Robbery where one team tries to loot the bank and the other defends it, reversing the roles of the teams after each round. You get cash from killing other players (or in the Bank Robbery mode, by successfully busting the safe and bringing the loot back to safe location). Your avatar takes different amounts of damage depending on which part of the body is hit (meaning a head-shot will probably take you out, but a leg-shot won’t). See Videos >>

The game is a treat for World War II tech enthusiasts, as tanks in Tank Ace are based on actual machines used in the war, and their strengths and weaknesses are represented in the game. You can play three factions in the game – the U.S., Germany, and the Soviet Union. The combat is intense and offers quite an immersive experience. Players can take part in four sorts of missions: recon, escort, destroy, and defend. Participating in PvE or PvP allows players to use skills, level up and add stats. In the short term, the game’s combat is more interesting than in, e.g., World of Tanks, but the fast respawn time and general gameplay does a lot to dumb down the strategy.

Tribes: Ascend is an MMO first-person shooter set on a persistent world of the Tribes universe. Tribes is a very old co-op FPS franchise – a genre classic for some. The newest reincarnation of Tribes uses the praised Unreal 3 engine to create a graphically splendid game which also excels in terms of gameplay. The game mostly focuses on capture the flag, but other modes like Team Death Match are available – and more are expected to be added after the game gets released. Mastering both movement and projectile aiming is key for success in Tribes: Ascend. It’s similar to games like Unreal Tournament (especially later generations of it where vehicles are featured) and Quake, not only in terms of gameplay, but also in the learning curve which can seem to be an overhang for players new to FPS. Note that Tribes: Ascend requires a decent PC to run, especially on higher settings. See Videos >>

Some weapons require less skill than others (like the raged about Splatter Gun, used a great deal by new players due to its wide spread and high damage). The game works on both Mac OS and Windows. Regular group tournaments are available in teams of as few as one. There are more powerful weapons you can purchase on a per-day basis (for game-coin or real world cash). For a quick fix, the standard bat, machine gun, and plenty of map pick-up items should keep you gunning for an hour or so. See Videos >>
